BIO - Tony Sauder is a registered professional engineer and geologist with more than 30 years of experience in water resources, hydrogeology and environmental engineering. His diverse experience includes evaluating water harvesting in semi-arid regions of Africa; testing a high capacity public water supply well in New Jersey; and determining protective discharge limits based on low flows in a Pennsylvania stream. He has lived and worked internationally over 10 years on projects involving water supply and sustainable development in Chad, Sudan, Honduras, the Dominican Republic and Belize. In his community development work, Tony has sought to facilitate access to water and communicate the benefits of improved water sources and sanitation on health. Tony continues to consult as a Sr. Engineer/Hydrogeologist at Pennoni, blending his academic and practical experience. He also serves as a professional mentor to the Penn Engineers without Borders’ (EWB) for water and sanitation projects in Honduras, Guatemala and Cameroon. Tony received his Master of Science in Civil Engineering from Drexel University in 1996 along with his Master of Science in Engineering Geology with a concentration in hydrogeology.
ABSTRACT - Life skills learned in many settings are relevant in my professional life. I have worked in the aftermath of wars, famines and hurricanes (and now a pandemic), but always trying to look for sustainable path toward improving quality of life. Will touch on the UN Sustainable Development Goals, especially as they relate Goal 6: Clean water and sanitation. I will relate project experiences from UPenn Engineers without Borders (PennEWB) and Global Water Alliance (GWA) in Honduras, Cameroon and Guatemala. Locally, there are many challenges, such as avoiding emerging contaminants like PFAS in local water supplies and restoring urban streams.
